What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a small cap fitted over a weak or decayed tooth. Often made from tooth-colored porcelain or zirconia, its main role is to keep harmful bacteria out of the treatment site. The crown’s material also blends seamlessly with a patient’s surrounding teeth.

Due to such features, the best candidates for dental crowns have traits like the following:

  • Decayed or Fractured Teeth
  • Dental Fillings That Failed
  • Bite Problems That Need Correction
  • A Tooth Treated with Root Canal Therapy
  • An Existing But Damaged Dental Crown

The Dental Crown Process

Placing a dental crown takes (at most) two dental visits. For the first one, our team “preps” the affected tooth for its final restoration. We place the actual crown at the second appointment.

Dr. Miedema will perform several steps at the preparatory visit. For starters, she’ll numb your tooth so the “prep work” doesn’t hurt; the most you’ll sense from it is a slight pressure. She’ll then remove any old fillings before rebuilding your tooth’s missing structure. Next is the removal of some enamel to make room for the crown, after which we’ll take an impression of your tooth. Workers use this impression to craft the final cap over 2-3 weeks; you’ll wear a temporary one in the meantime.

In contrast, the second visit is less invasive. We’ll just secure your crown (with dental cement) and ensure it blends well with its surroundings. Afterward, we’ll polish your cap and let you enjoy your repaired tooth!
